We Need Local Planning for Local Communities

Whittlesford Houses

The news that the District Council intends to build 49,000 new houses as part of the Liberal Democrat's Local Plan has rightly caused outrage amongst residents. The sheer scale of the plans and its impact on local roads, healthcare, school places and the widespread damage to our cherished green spaces, has led many to question how these decisions are taken.

Our approach is to build the homes and key infrastructure that we need to enhance quality of life and to provide somewhere to live for our families and for local key workers. To do this, we would put parish councils at the heart of the process to allow local people a greater say in how planning applications are decided.

The Lib Dems rejected our proposal. When we asked if this was driven by their lack of trust in our parish councillors, who commit so much to their local communities, we did not receive an answer. Now is the time for real and lasting reform and we will continue to fight for it.

The Conservative group are fighting for you:

At a full District Council meeting in September 2021, the Conservative group proposed a change to local planning rules in which our parish communities would become a central part of the planning process. It is our belief that the best people to consider an application are those who live and work within the affected area.

Making planning decisions by diktat in Cambourne, based upon a spreadsheet of targets, leads to wholly unsuitable developments being approved.
