The Conservative Group and Independent members at South Cambridgeshire District Council has called for an extraordinary full council meeting to address concerns raised in the recent letter from the Secretary of State to the Lib Dem run council.
The letter highlighted the government's concerns of the impact of their 4-day working week on 5 days’ pay was having on service delivery and value for money. Residents who are paying for the 4-day week, deserve answers. It’s important to have open debate and accountability and councillors from all parties and none should have the opportunity to discuss the implications of the Secretary of State’s intervention.
Leader of the Opposition, Cllr Heather Williams said:
“Two days on from receiving the letter, all councillors have had is a throwaway comment of three sentences. When the Secretary of State writes such a damning letter about your council you cannot sit by and do nothing. This must be discussed across the whole of the council ensuring that every resident has representation. The Lib Dems cannot simply brush this under the carpet and hide behind council officers. They need to be upfront and honest in public about what this means for residents and be held accountable for their actions. This is why we are calling for an extraordinary full council meeting.”
Opposition councillors have requested that the extraordinary full council meeting be scheduled to ensure transparency and full public scrutiny.
