Government power grab threatens local democracy in Greater Cambridge

Local concern has been raised following today’s announcement by the Minister launching a consultation on the proposed Development Corporation for Greater Cambridge. The proposal represents a significant shift of power away from local communities and democratically elected representatives - with little to show for residents in return.

The consultation outlines plans that could see planning powers transferred to a centrally directed body, sparking fears that local voices will be sidelined in decisions that will fundamentally shape the future of Greater Cambridge and surrounding villages.

The Conservative Group at South Cambridgeshire District Council have strongly criticised the proposal, warning that it risks undermining local democracy while placing further strain on already stretched communities.

Leader of the Conservative Opposition Group, Cllr Heather Williams said:
“Naturally it will take time to go through this in detail but from the Minister’s statement and an initial look this feels like an absolute power grab from government to take control of planning in Greater Cambridge. It has nothing to offer residents other than grief and disruption. Let’s be clear this is not about helping people that live here, this is the national government wanting to rinse every penny they can get their hands on from the Cambridge cash cow. I suggest the government get a grip of the country’s finances rather than coming to us to bail them out."

"If they want to help us here, then they can give us the infrastructure we need for our population as it is now - not under the agreement of 150,000 houses. The consultation shows the real threat that this corporation has to completely remove local voices and elected, accountable people from the planning process. Be of no mistake this parliamentary power grab will see local voices ignored and could make South Cambs into an unrestricted developers paradise.”

The Conservative Group argue that communities are already struggling with insufficient infrastructure, including transport, healthcare, schools and water supply, and that further large-scale development without firm guarantees will only worsen these pressures.

They are urging residents, parish councils and local organisations to engage fully with the consultation and make their concerns known - stressing that the decisions made now could have long-lasting consequences for democratic accountability, local character and quality of life across Greater Cambridge.
